Who to blame… () ()
Tuesday August 23rd 2005, 11:46 am in Rants

On my way in today, the crew from Z100 was talking about the recent club-related (or club vicinity) shootings and this article from WWeek. (I’m not going to dive into the article itself, because that is just way too much to discuss on its own. But that’s what spawned the thoughts.)

Well, the callers and the hosts got into their usual banter about who’s fault it is, etc. that kids turn out like this. Seems like everyone wants to blame something/someone all the time. The parents, the media, the school teachers, and so on. Ultimatley, why do we care who is to BLAME. A lot of good that does in blaming someone. I do think that “the media” needs to become a bit more socially responsible but that’s sure not going to happen. Yes, parents should monitor their children’s activities, but who can be everywhere all the time? Being overbearing doesn’t teach anything anyway, it just pushes people the other way.

What can we do? I think we need to collectively change our own attitudes. What can WE do to fix problems - not who’s fault is it. Not what parents need to do, or the media needs to do. What can I do? I don’t have the answer. I keep trying to change my attitude the minute I realize that I’m looking down on someone (yeah, it happens sometimes) I look at myself and see how good I have it. How can I help everyone else have it better?

I think it ultimately comes down to respect. I feel like a geezer when I think thoughts like “children now days have no respect” but it’s being more and more true!

So how do you teach respect? You don’t. I think respect is something you show, and demand. You can’t teach it, but you can discuss and teach the principles of respect. Then you have to show it and LIVE it every day. And yes, it starts at home because ultimately parents have a huge influence in their children’s fate.

Yeah, it was a bit of a ramble. But here’s the main point: It pisses me off when everyone blames someone, takes no accountability, and doesn’t do anything about things themselves. Do something about it, or keep your yap shut but don’t blame someone else who’s not doing anything about it either. Do something and say something. Don’t do anything and don’t say anything. Pick one.

It’s ur fault dude. Stop trying to get others to take accountability. It’s you - ur the reason all that shit is happening.
